Wyrd Gnomes

Fezir looked down at the arrow buried in his chest…and as the momentary glimpse into the future faded, he had just enough time to duck and shout ‘AMBUSH!’ as that same arrow flew from the shadows, narrowly missing him by just a few inches.

Fezir, a Wyrd Gnome

Wyrd gnomes are born from natural, genetic mutations, often among populations of more common gnomes. While their appearances can vary greatly, often reflecting the gnomish subrace from which they were born, one feature shared by all wyrd gnomes is their heterochromatic eyes: the left one always blue, the right one always green. Their eyes aren’t the only peculiar thing about this race, however.

Wyrd gnomes possess an innate prescient ability that grows stronger in proximity to other wyrd gnomes. Some gnome communities find their powers a blessing, while others find it disturbing. Over generations, wyrd gnomes have gathered together in small communities of their own kind. However, wyrd gnomes don’t always birth more wyrd gnomes, and their communities and families have gnomes of other varieties within them. Given the collective prescient power of wyrd gnome communities, they can be fascinating places to visit. Travelers may enter an inn to find the food and drink they wished to order already in place on a table. Conversations may start with wyrd gnomes giving answers before the questions are asked.

Roleplaying Tips.
When playing a wyrd gnome, you may want to consider whether your character considers their natural divination abilities a blessing or a curse. The former might proudly make use of those abilities, using their prescience to offer an ally a second chance, or to impose a twist of bad luck on their enemies. The latter however, might keep their abilities close to their chest, using them only to alter their own fate, passing off their heterochromia as nothing more than a genetic irregularity. Another importance choice might be your relationship with your clan, or whether you have one at all, given the importance of community to most wyrd gnomes. As far as your class, with their natural intelligence and wisdom, they make fantastic spellcasters, but if your DM allows you to modify your racial bonuses, their divine capabilities make them a great fit for any class!

The wyrd gnome is one of the many races created by our partners at Kobold Press and available to subscribers in our Core Content Pack, along with others such as the Dhampir or the Spindrift Dwarves.
