Rangers who seek to become Griffon Scouts specialize in moving swiftly and stealthily, both on foot and while mounted, in order to engage in devastating hit-and-run raids with precision and coordination. Even when separated from their mounts, these rangers are still a deadly force to be reckoned with, infamous for their ability to strike swiftly and return to the shadows of the forest before their targets know what hit them.
Griffon Scouts must often earn the right to be awarded their own griffon mount, and until then, they train in mounted combat with other lesser steeds, both mundane and magical. They eventually gain the ability to summon a magical steed, and with enough training, that steed can even take the form of a griffon. These rangers are also trained to expertly coordinate their attacks with their companions, able to follow-up an allies attack with one of their own to quickly focus down their targets.
Roleplaying Tips.
Rangers who pursue the Griffon Scout archetype are most likely from an area with forested woodland or mountain foothills, where griffons are native. They are not exclusive to any one race, though elves are perhaps the most well-known among their ranks. Griffon Scouts understand that they are only as powerful as the mount beneath them, and the companions at their side. They work well in groups and help to coordinate tactical ambushes, though they may also scout ahead to take out a lone guard if the situation calls for it. They will also likely have a great respect for all steeds, from horses to griffons, and may not tolerate the mistreatment of them in their presence. The forest dweller and nomad backgrounds are both a safe choice, given the Griffon Scout’s affinity for nature. However, your Griffon Scout could instead be from a clan or tribe that uses their abilities for more sinister purposes, choosing to serve as mercenary recruits or trophy hunters.
